On December 7th, 2022, the School of Animation Art held an online evaluation session for the short-term master studio on “Installation Art and Interactive Design”, and the international master studio has come to a successful conclusion.

The jury team was composed of Eric Leguay, a guest professor of Jilin Animation Institute and an expert teacher of 3iS Institut International de l‘Image et du Son, Patrick Olivier, an international consultant in the field of culture and communication management in France, Du Chuanyong, assistant dean of School of Animation Art in JAI, Liu Xu, deputy director of New Media Animation, together with professional teachers Qiang Qian, Wang Li and Gao Ming.

Students presented their final product videos in group order, and then explained and answered the judges’ questions on the creativity, art design and interactive technology of their works. The judges rated the students’ works on four aspects, innovation, aesthetics, technicality and feasibility. Both Eric Leguay and Patrick Olivier gave wonderful comments and full recognition to the students’ works and presentations.

Type: Interactive installation
Introduction: It describes the rest of life of an old man suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. The television set plays a loop of memories of the old man, with a snowy screen flashing to represent his memory confusion due to the disease. The red button attracts the viewer to tap on the television set, which leads to memory confusion of the elderly, using this behavior to make the participants feel the mental state of the Alzheimer’s patient and the impact that inappropriate behavior can have on the patient.

Name: Childhood in a Jar
Team Members: Li Qiuyun, Cheng Tao, Wang Jiaqi, Huang Qing, Zhang Rourou, Li Meng, Sun Lei
Type: Moving image installation
Introduction: Childhood in a Jar is an art installation that combines indoctrination education with interactive projection technology. The four stages of the girl in the projection animation correspond to the four seasons of spring, summer, autumn and winter, and the girl’s favorite people and things disappear with the coming of the wave, showing the inner world of “a girl growing up in a jar”.

Name: Little Genius of Sichuan Opera
Team Members: Liu Zijian, Zheng Junjun, Kang Junhong, Liao Chuning, Wang Xu, Wang Yuna, Bi Jiaqi, Lin Tian
Type: Holographic projection installation
Introduction: An interactive animation installation based on the theme of Sichuan opera, a traditional Chinese opera. The characters of Sichuan opera and the holographic projection device combine to interact. The little genius of Sichuan opera can do anything, showing the beauty of Sichuan opera.

Name: Like a Dream
Team Members: Chen Yaokun, Zhang Yue, Xie Ningyi, Su Hongwei, Yang Xuying, Wan Jiarui, Li Ruitong, Zhang Siyi
Type: Interactive projection installation
Introduction: The background of the work is Li Qingzhao’s Ru Meng Ling from the Song Dynasty. The gull in the picture is manipulated by the gull in the physical booth. It allows the visitor to experience the scenery in the painting. And the visitor can control the gull to the designated position to trigger the matching poem in the screen.

Type: Interactive projection installation
Introduction: The installation wants to convey the idea of lighting up the starry sky and protecting the environment through one’s own efforts. It creates a small fairy tale world for children. The first part is an immersive interactive projection to experience the process of planting stars, and the second part is a physical installation where visitors can directly experience it.

Name: This is Xinjiang
Team Members: Xu Wenjie, Zhang Shuhan, Liu Rui, Wang Yuxuan, Tang Jiao, Zhang Ning
Type: Interactive projection installation and fashion Mapping projection
Introduction: This work uses projection and somatic interaction to show the special culture of Xinjiang. The four different pages are the four contents of Xinjiang’s clothing, food, housing and transportation, and each page uses three different styles to dynamically switch and display. Using fashion Mapping projection, Xinjiang characteristic patterns are projected on the body to achieve a variety of playful interactive experience of Xinjiang culture.

After the judging, Qiang Qian gave a brief introduction of the International Master Studio Online Exhibition. The exhibition area and the main visual design were done by Liu Yuhang, Wang Xinhe and teachers and students from New Media Animation Department. 

There were 20 pieces of online works, including traditional culture, regional brand, social phenomenon and ecological environment. Works include interactive projection installations, 3D mapping projections, holographic projections, immersive images, augmented reality and virtual reality, etc. The theme of the exhibition area is Initial, Cocoon Breaking, Remote and Traceability, which correspond to different exhibition halls. The dynamic posters symbolize the infinite potential of the students in the Department of New Media Animation of the School of Animation Art, just like the Mobius strip, which symbolizes eternity and infinity.

At the end of the evaluation session, Du Chuanyong, assistant dean of the School of Animation Art, made a concluding speech about the evaluation session and the online course exhibition of the master studio, saying that he was pleased with the learning results of the online studio jointly created by France and China, and he really felt the unlimited creative potential of the students in the process of project creation and concrete production. The studio on the topic of “Installation Art and Interactive Design”, which was jointly created by France and China, provided more possibilities for the innovation and transformation of digital art in the new era and the future exploration of innovation in digital art education in the School of Animation Art of JAI.
