School of Design was established in August 2021 by integrating the former School of Design, School of Product, Department of Design Fundamentals and School of Film and Television Modeling’s Fashion and Apparel Design Major.Relying on the college’s three School-running Characteristics of “Openness and International Orientation; Integration of Education, Research and Industry; Technicalization of Creative Products”, the school promotes the integrated development of “art, technology, culture and market”, leads the profession with the market, supports art with technology, and forms the unique advantages of talent cultivation in cultural and creative fields. Focusing on the needs of design talents in the era of “cultural heritage and innovation, integration, research and application of art and science, convergence and entrepreneurship of art and business”, we strive to create a paradigm for training applied design innovation talents, cultivating timeless and practical design innovation talents in the new era, and make every effort to establish a first-class design school in the region and well-known at home and abroad. At present, there are more than 2,000 students enrolled in the School, and the employment rate always remains above 90%.
The School offers seven undergraduate majors, including Visual Communication Design, Environmental Design, Product Design, Arts and Crafts, Fashion and Apparel Design, Art and Technology, and Packaging Design. By integrating domestic and foreign design education resources, innovating educational concepts, renovating teaching methods, and updating teaching content, the School aims to build a first-class professional cluster in design field. Among them, Visual Communication Design and Art and Technology are the national first-class undergraduate major construction points; Environmental Design and Product Design are the provincial first-class undergraduate major construction points. Design has been approved as a featured high-level discipline in Jilin Province, and visual communication design is a provincial brand major. The major of environmental design is the pilot major of provincial innovation and entrepreneurship education reform. At the same time, the School has established the provincial innovation experimental area for applied talent cultivation mode, the provincial experimental teaching demonstration center, and the provincial “double-qualified teacher and double-ability studio of design”
The School now has an international and diversified faculty and staff consisting of industry and education experts from South Korea, Singapore and Taiwan, China, as well as young backbone teachers who have studied abroad in France, Germany, Britain and the United States. Taking advantages of the project-based teaching, the School closely integrates the studio, laboratory and market demand to comprehensively enhance students’ comprehensive design ability of planning, integration and skill specialization, and to cultivate design innovation talents with innovative design consciousness and innovative design ability of inheriting the excellent traditional Chinese culture, who can combine the cultural transmission in the new era with foreign advanced design methods and technical principles and have international vision.
The School focuses on the design of cultural and creative derivative products, covering talent cultivation, work transformation, and entrepreneurial team incubation in fields such as architectural space, film and television clothing, digital visual design, etc. It has outstanding advantages and has completed the Ministry of Education’s collaborative education project, Jilin Province Social Science Fund project, Jilin Province Education Science Planning Key Project, Jilin Province Education and Teaching Reform Key Project , the achievement exhibition celebrating the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China -- “Time Jilin”, “Smile Jilin” and other projects to serve local art creation. The professional construction achievements of the School have awarded one each of the first, second and third prizes for teaching achievements in Jilin Province in 2022.
