Recently, Jilin Animation Institute and Dongseo University of Korea jointly launched the China–Korea Animation Workshop at Jilin Animation Institute. The workshop featured four main activities: thematic seminars, academic lectures, collaborative creation, and cultural practice, promoting multidimensional exchanges and skill development among faculty and students. During the event, a signing ceremony for joint creative projects was held, marking a new stage in cooperation between the two universities in animation education and production, and injecting fresh momentum into China–Korea professional exchanges and development in the animation field.

At the opening ceremony, Liu Zhenhua, Executive President of Jilin Animation Institute, stated that the workshop is centered on “cross-boundary dialogue and innovative co-creation in China–Korea animation education and production,” aiming to provide a platform for in-depth exchanges between faculty and students. He expressed his hope that the two universities would use core technologies as an engine to expand the boundaries of cooperation, promote high-quality integration of industry and education, achieve international dissemination and sustainable transformation of academic outcomes, and establish the workshop as a new benchmark for China–Korea collaboration in animation education. He also encouraged faculty and students to root themselves in the cultural contexts of both countries and leverage cutting-edge technologies, such as artificial intelligence, to empower professional research and enhance global competence.

Choi DongHyuk, Head of the Department of Film and Animation at the School of Media Contents, Dongseo University, expressed his honor at being invited to participate in the event. He noted that in the context of rapid development in artificial intelligence, both parties should leverage their respective strengths and join forces to create a new education system, which will be an important direction for future collaboration between the two universities. He looks forward to continuing the strong cooperative relationship, encouraging students from both schools to integrate Chinese and Korean cultures and creativity, and jointly develop pioneering animation projects.

At the faculty seminar on “Inheritance and Innovation of Eastern Aesthetics in Animation Creation” and the teacher–student seminar on “Emerging Technology Driving the Expansion of Animation Creation Boundaries,” faculty and students from both universities engaged in interactive discussions on how emerging technologies are transforming animation production methods and breaking the boundaries of content and themes. These exchanges sparked cross-generational innovative thinking, bringing new perspectives and directions to animation creation.

During the academic lecture session, Choi Dong-hyuk delivered a lecture titled “The Future of Animated Films Created with AI,” analyzing the current applications and future trends of artificial intelligence in animation film production, opening new perspectives for faculty and students on technology-empowered animation creation. Guan Jian, a faculty member of the School of Animation Arts at Jilin Animation Institute, focused on “AI Empowering 3D Animation Production Processes,” using practical case studies to explain how AI technology can optimize various stages of 3D animation production and enhance both creative efficiency and quality. More than 160 faculty and students from both universities attended the lectures.
Collaborative Creation in Progress
During the collaborative creation session, faculty and students from both universities worked together on the 3D animated short film Between Light and Shadow. From conceptualization and script refinement to technical implementation, both sides leveraged their respective strengths, deeply integrating Chinese and Korean cultural elements and creative philosophies.
During the workshop, Korean faculty and students visited the Jilin Animation Institute History Museum, the Jilin International Animation Museum, and the exhibition on the lineage and spirit of Chinese animation. They learned about the Institute’s development history, explored the global evolution of animation culture, appreciated the achievements of Chinese animation, and gained an in-depth understanding of the cultural connotations and spiritual heritage of Chinese animation. Through this series of cultural visits, Korean faculty and students experienced Chinese animation culture and local Jilin culture comprehensively, accumulating valuable material for cross-cultural animation creation.
The China–Korea Animation Workshop represents an important step in deepening international cooperation between Jilin Animation Institute and Dongseo University, and is a concrete manifestation of the Institute’s “open internationalization” approach to education. Centered on the theme of “Cross-Boundary Co-Creation,” the two universities not only established a high-quality platform for exchange in animation education and production but also contributed to China–Korea cultural exchange and the collaborative development of animation programs. Looking ahead, both institutions will continue to expand the scope of cooperation and deepen its content, jointly writing a new chapter in China–Korea animation education and collaboration.
