Recently, a specialized training program on enhancing teachers’ teaching competence under the Standards for International Chinese Language Education was held in Changchun. Thirty-seven participants from 14 institutions across China took part, exchanging ideas on applying the standards, strengthening teachers’ professional skills, and sharing Chinese culture with international audiences.

The program’s closing ceremony was held at Jilin Animation Institute. Attendees included Hu Zhiping, Executive Council Member of the China Association for Non-Government Education and Chair of its Committee on International Communication of Chinese Culture; He Wei, Director of the Standards, Testing and Assessment Division at the Center for Language Education and Cooperation of China’s Ministry of Education; Liu Xin, Vice Chair of the Board of Jilin Animation Institute and Vice Chair of the Committee on International Communication of Chinese Culture; and Wei Shuhua, Secretary-General of the committee. Hu delivered closing remarks, Liu spoke on behalf of the co-organizing institution, and Wei presided over the ceremony.

The program was organized by the Committee on International Communication of Chinese Culture of the China Association for Non-Government Education, with support and guidance from the Center for Language Education and Cooperation of China’s Ministry of Education. Jilin International Studies University hosted the program, and Jilin Animation Institute served as a co-organizer. The opening ceremony was held at Jilin International Studies University on August 14.

Over three days, the training followed the Chinese Proficiency Grading Standards for International Chinese Language Education and addressed the sector’s needs for standardization, quality assurance, and digital development. Topics included policies and standards, language instruction, culture teaching, lesson planning, teaching reflection, and the application of digital technologies. Through lectures, immersive study visits, group lesson planning, mock teaching demonstrations, and expert feedback, participants connected theoretical learning with classroom practice.

Hu Zhiping Delivers Closing Remarks

Hu said the program brought together study of the standards, observational learning, teaching practice, and presentation of outcomes, deepening participants’ understanding of how to apply the standards in their work. He encouraged participating institutions to use the program as an opportunity to strengthen their teaching teams and inter-institutional exchange, and to continue improving the quality of international Chinese language education.

Liu Xin Speaks on Behalf of the Co-Organizer

Liu noted that language builds bridges between people, while culture provides a vehicle for communication. International Chinese language education, she said, should be guided by clear standards and integrate language teaching with China’s fine traditional culture.

Jilin Animation Institute is ready to draw on its strengths in animation, comics, games, film and television design, and digital cultural and creative industries to develop engaging teaching resources rooted in Chinese culture. These resources can help bring Chinese culture to life in intercultural classrooms and exchanges among young people.

Before the closing ceremony, participants visited the Institute’s history museum and an exhibition of original works from China’s classic comic books. They learned about the Institute’s development and explored the cultural value embodied in traditional animation, comics, and fine art.

The exhibition is an important platform for experiential arts education at the Institute. By connecting its collection and exhibition space with course teaching, it makes the museum a classroom, the exhibits teaching materials, and the visit a learning experience. The visit enriched the program’s practical arts education component and offered participants ideas for incorporating China’s artistic heritage into international Chinese language education.

Participants then presented mock lessons prepared in groups. Cao Ru, Dean of the School of International Education at Liaoning Normal University, professor and doctoral supervisor, and Ju Hui, Deputy Director of the Overseas Publishing Division at the Higher Education Press, provided feedback on standards, lesson design, teaching resources, and the use of digital technologies. They offered practical recommendations for refining the lessons and adapting them for use at participants’ home institutions.

Hu Zhiping and He Wei presented certificates of completion to the participants.

Looking ahead, Jilin Animation Institute will continue to draw on its strengths in digital cultural and creative industries and deepen its collaboration with the Committee on International Communication of Chinese Culture and universities across China. The Institute will explore the development of teaching resources guided by national standards, build collaborative research and teaching networks with domestic and international partners, and create digital communication platforms that connect education with industry.

Through these efforts, the Institute will further develop practical approaches that integrate international Chinese language education, digital cultural and creative industries, and arts education. It will continue to support the creative transformation and innovative development of China’s fine traditional culture, contribute to higher-quality international Chinese language education, and help share China’s stories and perspectives with the world.
