A landmark AI animated short drama developed by a Chinese university team, this fantasy work rooted in the oriental mythos of Classic of Mountains and Seas quickly drew wide attention from fans of Chinese-style short dramas upon release, thanks to its fast-paced plot and high-quality visuals.
As an AI animated short drama, this production goes far beyond simple AI-generated footage. Human-AI collaboration is deeply integrated into the entire workflow, from pre-production concept design, unified character asset management, shot creation and motion assistance, to post-production VFX rendering and visual consistency optimization. Leveraging AI’s rapid iteration capacity, the team established a cohesive artistic style for dozens of mythical characters and environments within a tight schedule. Targeted adjustments were made to fix common pitfalls of AI animation such as inconsistent character appearances and jarring visual effects. The result is a distinctive visual portrayal of the wild wasteland: pure qi flows lightly like streamers of light while turbid qi surges and engulfs like ink waves. Subtle details including the fur movement of mythical beasts and spreading spell halos deliver physically plausible dynamics.

Shanhai Universe: Battle of Purity and Turbidity marks a milestone of Jilin Animation Institute’s “integrated teaching, research and industry” philosophy in the AI animated short drama sector, and is the first market-oriented work by the School of Future Intelligent Imaging. Powered by the dual engines of “AI + Film & Television” and “Art + Technology”, the school cultivates interdisciplinary creators equipped with creativity, aesthetic judgment, mastery of the full industrial workflow of AI imaging and industry-oriented thinking for the cultural sector of tomorrow.
The project broke down barriers between classroom teaching and commercial application. Led by animation and AI technology supervisors, a cross-major student team completed the full cycle of an AI animated short drama, from conceptual initiation to platform launch. The team defined market positioning, refined high-conflict storylines tailored for short drama audiences, optimized AI production efficiency, resolved typical visual challenges in AI animation, and adjusted content to meet platform release standards. Within a real commercial project, students translated classroom animation theories and AI skills into hands-on practical capabilities. This faculty-student co-creation model unlocks young creators’ intuitive understanding of short drama storytelling and Chinese-themed content. Supported by the institute’s industry-education integration resources, it continuously supplies interdisciplinary talents with both technical skills and content awareness for the emerging AI animation short drama field, connecting original campus creativity directly with the industry’s fast-growing market demands.
